HE GREW UP WITH A LEGEND, but due to the fantastic quality of the work he himself produces, KEITH "KID" DEAN, is fast becoming a Legend in his own right !
Keith's Dad was the iconic "King of Chops" DICK DEAN. But, from a very early age, Keith decided that his "art form" should be Rods & Customs...with the emphasis on "customs". And if you've seen some of his work, you'll understand how detailed, and beautiful it is. All-in-all a real tribute to his heritage.
Keith was profiled in-depth in a story by Anna Marco in CKD #47, shown above. Great story !! Check-it out on Page 8 & 9 of that Issue !
KEITH & I SPENT SOME QUALITY TIME at the 31st Annual KKOA Lead Sled in Salina in 2011, and he was kind enough to join me for a late-night Interview that lasted until the wee hours of the morning. But it was worth evey minute of it as Keith's stories of his early years, his Dad, and, his favorite cars, are so interesting that you'll want to hear 'em more than once !
Keith's work on Harold Saul's '40 Merc is featured in Car Kulture DeLuxe #43, pictured here, on Pages 34 & 35 !
Keith was Inducted into the GNRS Hall Of Fame in 2010, and has been nominated for Induction into the KKOA Hall Of Fame in both 2011 & 2012, and was Inducted in 2013 ! AND, in 2015, was Inducted into Darryl Starbird's National Rod & Custom Car Hall Of Fame ! I was privileged to be at BOTH Ceremonies ! Plus, in 2015, Keith was also Inducted into the WCK Hall of Fame...well-deserving on all counts !!
THERE IS A GREAT FEATURE STORY ON KEITH in Car Kulture DeLuxe #47 (Aug. 2011) that you really should read. Also, his work on Harold Saul's gorgeous '40 Merc can be seen in CKD #43 (Dec. 2010), and, his contributions to James Hetfield's Auburn Speedster by Rick Dore can be viewed in SRP Vol.2 No.1_Summer 2011.
BUT, FOR A REAL MIND BLOWER check-out John Saltsman's '49 Studebaker "Atomitron" (CKD #48, Oct. 2011) ! Keith Dean, along with his Dad, Dick Dean, George Barris, Gene Winfield, Larry Watson, Bill & Mike Hines, and, Brad Masterson...ALL contributed to this "Rodz Deluxe Award Winner" at the 2011 GNRS !
SHARING TIME WITH KEITH, was like being with an old friend. He's one of the nicest, kindest, and, most talented, craftsmen that you will ever meet. If you see him at a show, be sure to take some time to seek him out, shake hands with him, talk to him for a few minutes, and, I know you too will be impressed.
I WAS PRIVILEGED TO MEET & SPEND the better part of a weekend with DICK DEAN at Darryl Starbird's 2001 Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremonies at the HOF Museum in Oklahoma.
Dick was a great dinner companion and a consumate story teller. During that time, Dick told me how proud he was of Keith and the work he was doing. Well, I'm sure Dick is looking down on us right now and saying: "Kid, always remember: Anyone can restore a car, but it takes a real man to chop one up ! Keep on choppin' !" JK
